An odd and interesting little book. First of all, the history of the book itself is quite curious and full of interesting twists and turns. This is a reprinting of an translation originally published in a tirage of and sold to private subscribers of an early 19th century work written in Latin by a German scholar.
The 19th century language is a treat. Take the first paragraph of the foreword, for instance: Those persons, we think, who may peruse it as a means of awakening voluptuous sensations will be severely disappointed.

Never did a work more serious issue from the press. Here we have no curious erotic story born of a diseased mind, but a cold, relentless analysis of those human passions which it is ever the object of Science to wrestle with and overthrow. So, what is in this book? Basically, sexual behavior is classified into eight categories, and for each category, a range of classical citations is provided with a fairly minimal exegesis from the author.
It’s a really interesting read if you’re curious about what the Greeks and Romans particularly the Romans thought about sex. It’s striking how some things have changed dramatically, while other things remain impressively the same. On the other hand, the chapter on anal sex included a long digression on intimate grooming practices, and it is remarkable how the fraught social symbolism of depilation in the Roman period is reminiscent of ongoing debates in America.
There are also a few isolated passages presenting anxiety about living up to pornographic images, which in the Roman period apparently consisted of wall paintings and sculptures in the residences of the well-off, as well as maybe limited-edition illustrated volumes.
Quite an interesting find, if nothing else. Oct 14, Peace rated it really liked it.
What an odd little book! It catalogues different types of sexual behaviours under headings such as copulation, irrumation, pederasty, etc. I found it interesting that the chapter on masturbation only had a footnote on female masturbation, and that the one about tribads kept going on about women with massive clitorises using them as penises while claiming that cunnilingus between women was rare.
