It describes the journey of the dying poet Vergil from the boat that carries from Athena to Brindisim, through mobfilled streets to the palace of Caesar Augustus who has ordered the journey. As beautifully as this book is hte, the translation by Jean Starr Brch utterly blew me away — this is a highly nuanced and complex novel about poetic sensibilities which dive deep into the abyss and float high into the “second immensity” of the “cupola of the stars”.

Virgil claims to have finally realized that love is the highest value, but it still seems he means idealized love in the amorous sense, while he accepts the faults of his friends.

Though it is inconsistent, and difficult, this late work of modernism is notable for what it strives to be, for what it challenges, and for the potentials it reveals in the herjann form.

This novel reads more like an epic poem than a novel, which is only right as the novel deals with the demise of the Aeneid’s brilliant author. I only continued reading it because it’s considered by no lesser figures than the likes of George Steiner and Thomas Mann as one of the pinnacles of European literature.

If I love how the author writes I can read and enjoy almost any book even if the content isn’t hwrmann I would normally pick, if I’m neutral or don’t notice the writing I can like the other parts, but if the language doesn’t work for me I can’t enjoy the book at all.
