But then the book stopped focusing on long discussions of said psychology and forensics, tried for a bit of suspense and action which is did a fair job ofbut then it settled back down into a bit of a slog.


I felt totally immersed in the city and was sent Googling images of landmarks several times.

But that was ultimately unsatisfying, because it was just formulaic crime scene drama like you’d expect, except that the criminal profilers were seen as dangerous loons, not something that really mattered very much, or at least that impact was underrepresented.

I didn’t understand half the characters.

Absolutely love this tv series then found out that this was a book even better. There are so many good things to say about this book but the ending, well it just fell flat for me. Carr should have taken a lesson form the Sherlock Holmes tales for crisp story telling and from” The Silence of the Lambs” for building suspenseful drama.

I hate authors who are extremely descriptive about things that have absolutely no bearing to the story and this guy is one of them.

Wow, this was just spectacularly not good. April Book – The Alienist. I gave it the old college try until about halfway through the book before I couldn’t take it any longer and ended up flipping a few pages ahead whenever I saw those huge chunks of dialogue. I now have a name for the psychopathology of this crazymaking and injurious behaviour, but it I cannot continue to read this novel. His descriptions of the underside of New York are interesting as as they are the scenes of the crimes.

Plus, anything set in New York which is basically my second home is alright by me. Discovering the birth of police methods and of the use of psychology to determine the identity and assess the sanity of criminals was what kept me reading.
