If you do too, pick up a Madeleine Wickham novel. So, technically, this review is on the first pages because I couldn’t force myself to read beyond madelsine.

That said, this book is very much a character novel where everyone in it is thrown into a rather dramatic situation and has to do a lot of re-evaluating and development of their own lives before the denouement arrives, in a way that is both amusing and thoughtful — which is the kind of plot and character mix I really love. I usually enjoy reading Kinsella’s books, but this one was just bad.

There is a real heart to this story and an underlying theme of honesty, being who you truly are and living your truth. Educated at New College, Oxford, she worked as a financial journalist before turning to fiction.
This was a quick read, which I think most chick-lits should be. A chance encounter leads to the revelation of secrets from Milly’s past. Fabulous writing and pitch-perfect for the character and the scene.
